    Python 3.9 is available. What’s new:

    New syntax features:

    • PEP 584, union operators added to dict;
    • PEP 585, type hinting generics in standard collections;
    • PEP 614, relaxed grammar restrictions on decorators.

    New built-in features:

    • PEP 616, string methods to remove prefixes and suffixes.

    New features in the standard library:

    • PEP 593, flexible function and variable annotations;
    • os.pidfd_open() added that allows process management without races and signals.

    Interpreter improvements:

    • PEP 573, fast access to module state from methods of C extension types;
    • PEP 617, CPython now uses a new parser based on PEG;
    • a number of Python builtins (range, tuple, set, frozenset, list, dict) are now sped up using PEP 590 vectorcall;
    • garbage collection does not block on resurrected objects;
    • a number of Python modules (_abc, audioop, _bz2, _codecs, _contextvars, _crypt, _functools, _json, _locale, math, operator, resource, time, _weakref) now use multiphase initialization as defined by PEP 489;
    • a number of standard library modules (audioop, ast, grp, _hashlib, pwd, _posixsubprocess, random, select, struct, termios, zlib) are now using the stable ABI defined by PEP 384.

    New library modules:

    • PEP 615, the IANA Time Zone Database is now present in the standard library in the zoneinfo module;
    • an implementation of a topological sort of a graph is now provided in the new graphlib module.

    Release process changes:

    • PEP 602, CPython adopts an annual release cycle.

    Die vergangenen Tage waren wirklich unsortiert und das Foto ist auch nicht vom Montag. Aber das Kloster Reutberg gab ein so schönes Motiv ab, dass ich es für den Montag wieder verwenden wollte. Das Kloster ist von München aus gut zu erreichen, für die sportlicheren auch mit dem Fahrrad. Den Besucher erwartet ein Biergarten und eine wunderbare Landschaft mit Blick auf die bayerischen Alpen. Gleich hinter dem nächsten Hügel ist gewissermaßen der Tegernsee. Das Kloster verfügt über eine eigene Brauerei, man kann dort sehr genießen.

    How to Give Your Users Superpowers

    Application Programming Interfaces, or APIs, thrive and give companies an edge for focusing on very specific issues. While the pattern has been around sind the early 2000s, the ecosystem only started to develop this rapidly recently.

    Only to make an example, Twilio started their service as an API only offering. The problem the company solves is basically notification. On all channels, mainly texting and calling. Which by itself is pretty complex, compared to what the involving party actually wants to achieve. Twilio is wrapping this functionality to allow their customers take advantage of telecommunication.

    Grace Isford made an effort to classify vendors in the market, that follow similar patterns. The criteria for the selection in his chart are:

    • The product reduces complexity
    • The company provides Business Critical Functionality
    • It takes advantage of a technological shift
    • And finally a community factor

    The entire sector is currently exploding and it’s difficult to keep track. Specialised services, consumable through Web-APIs become a commodity for at least developers. Grace Isfords chart gives a good overview of the current situation, along with some criteria to consider the offering.

  • Datenschutz beim Elternabend

    Der Elternabend vor einer Woche war schon unterhaltsam. Die Tatsache, dass die Schule Microsoft Teams einführt um ggF. “Homeschooling” durchführen zu können, hat bei einigen Teilnehmern zu hochroten Köpfen geführt. Microsoft will nur an die Daten der Kinder. Klar.

    Zwischenzeitlich hat jeder einfach nicht bloß das Geburtsdatum des Kindes, sondern auch noch Adresse, Telefonnummer und das eigene Geburtsdatum auf die zirkulierende Liste gesetzt.

    Bei der Abstimmung, ob WhatsApp oder – der Datenschutzbedenken wegen – vielleicht Signal als Messenger Dienst zum Einsatz kommen soll hat natürlich: WhatsApp gewonnen.

    Und der Ärger über den Datenschutz und Microsoft Teams ist seit dem einen Abend komplett verflogen.
