Facebook is working on an AI voice assistant similar to Alexa
Facebook had a rough 2018 and 2019 didn’t really start too well either, when Instagram leaked passwords. Meanwhile, Amazon’s Alexa had it’s own scandal when it turned out that not machines but humans listened to their customers commands. With all of this combined, it doesn’t sound like a great idea to offer more surface for these kind of events. Still, Facebook seems to plan to release a voice assistant of its own.
There’s no indication that it will extend outside Facebook’s own hardware—yet.

Internet wird kein Massenmedium
Zur Debatte um Digitalisierung ein schönes Fundstück aus dem Jahr 2001. Damals hatten wir schon DSL in der WG und mp3 zu tauschen war unter den Musikambitionierteren Studenten groß in Mode. Gut, vielleicht war mein Umfeld auch keine Referenz für den allgemeinen Zustand der Gesellschaft, aber meines Erachtens konnte man damals den Trend schon gut Absehen. Gerade der Neue Markt hat ja seit 1997 oder 1998 einiges an Aufmerksamkeit ausserhalb der Technik-Szene erzeugt und sich am Ende mit dem Zusammenbruch bis etwa 2003 zurückgehalten. Als sprach 2001 eher mehr dafür, dass das Internet nicht wieder weggeht. Trotzdem waren zum 2. März 2001 wohl noch Leute der Meinung, dass Internet kein Massmedium werden würde. Es sind vermutlich die gleichen gewesen, die 18 Jahre später Neuland durchschreiten.

Apple considering offline mode for Siri
Not sure about how you use Siri or other voice assistants. For me, it’s in the car mostly or in other locations that just don’t have connectivity in that moment I’d need assistance. Local voice processing – in other words no cloud required – would indeed be a huge step for Apple or the technology as such. It’d also be an improvement looking at it from the privacy perspective.
If only Siri became better in understanding me.
